Smaller than expected group shows off their talent

TAMPA Despite several no-shows at the local
finals at City Side on Feb. 16, the talent was
definitely out-especially in men's pop, the night's
largest category.
"I was surprised at the number of new faces we
saw tonight and I was also pleased with the talent
they brought to the stage," said head judge and
contest co-owner Phil Garris. "I think a lot of
them came in thinking this was just another
contest. Now I hope they realize they're in the big
leagues."
The popular Tampa Bar only had two female
contestants-one in masters and one in pop. The
men definitely dominated during the night.
"I kind of expected there to me more male
singers tonight," said emcee and contest
co-owner Steve Blanchard. "We've been at City
Side before. It's a great bar and it always brings

out the male singers. They didn't disappoint us tonight."
Several singers were surprised to hear they would face nearly 300 other singers in the Talent Quest Sunshine State
Regional Finals Apri. 7-10 at the Double Tree Westshore Hotel in downtown Tampa. The contest has doubled in size
in its second year with 14 venues on board holding local qualifying rounds.
"As with most local finals, the weakest area for the singers was appearance," Garris said. "Some were prepared,
some weren't. I hope our judges were able to pass on the importance of appearance at the next level. You have to
dress the part for the song you're performing or else this contest will eat you up on the regional level."
Contestants who did not qualify were encouraged to try again at Tampa's other qualifying venue, Chelsea Nightclub.
